The renowned theatre artiste and film personality Tom
Alter (Thomas Beach Alter) succumbed to prolonged illness due to skin cancer
and breathed his last at 2 am on Sep 30. He was 67.
"Tom was battling stage four skin cancer at a Mumbai
hospital, where he was admitted earlier in September. He returned home on
Thursday and breathed his last on Friday night," informed
his manager, Ismail Ansari.

A statement released on behalf of his family read:
"It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer,
director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night
at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for
their privacy to be respected at this time."
He made his debut on the silver screen with Charas in
1976 and essayed many roles in over 300 films. Apart from movies, he was also a
part of many television shows; he was last seen in STAR Plus' Rishton Ka
Chakravyuh in 2017. Alter has written three books, one non-fiction and two
fiction, and in 2008 was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian
government in recognition for his services to the field of arts and cinema.
